Mechanism  BST-2, or Tetherin, restricts the release of Ebola virus-like particles (VLPs) from infected cells by tethering the budding virions to the cell membrane, thereby inhibiting their release. This restriction is similar to BST-2's activity against other enveloped viruses like HIV-1. However, Ebola glycoprotein (GP) has evolved mechanisms to counteract BST-2, enabling efficient release of Ebola VLPs. The specific molecular mechanisms by which Ebola GP antagonizes BST-2 are still under investigation, but it likely involves disrupting the interaction between BST-2 and virions, potentially by interfering with BST-2 ectodomain self-interaction.
